HOW TO GROUND YOURSELF (and the Dos and Don’ts)

It’s important to remember to unplug, but what is grounding, and why is it necessary? 

We have so much water in our bodies, allowing the moon to influence our feelings and perceptions. Grounding helps us reconnect with the earth and the physical environment around us.
Grounding can create the necessary space to disconnect from the negative noise of everyday life, allowing us to centre ourselves and reestablish our home environment or safe spaces as the havens they are.

The great thing about grounding is that anyone can do it anywhere, anytime. A few minutes a day is a great start. The more you ground, the more your confidence builds and releases those anxieties and fears that can tie us down. 

Before we begin, here are a few things to remember:

DO: 

  • Take your shoes and socks off.

  • Find somewhere that’s comfortable.

  • Allow thoughts to come and go.

  • Remember to be grateful.

DON’T: 

  • Answer or check your phone. 

  • Involve anyone else in this activity. This one’s all about you.

  • Spend energy problem-solving.

  • Overthink the process.

  • Be surprised if pets join.

  • Forget to have some fun.

Now that we’ve got that covered, let’s begin!

For those who need a moment of stillness:

  1. Find a quiet, relaxed position with your bare feet on the ground. This can be inside or outside — it’s up to you.

  2. Breathe deeply through your nose and out through your mouth. Grounding is our time to connect with our physical body.

  3. Place your hand on top of your head with an open palm to calm and centre your third eye. Spend 3-5 minutes here, breathing deeply and concentrating on your body's sensations and feelings.

  4. Be grateful for this moment you’ve created to reconnect with yourself or nature.

For those who love to move:

Many people don’t realise we hold our emotional trauma in our hips. So moving or dancing connects us to our inner well of healing. Moving your hips realigns your body so your energy centres flow freely, allowing our bodies to feel happier and more grounded naturally. Other great daily practices include cleaning and baking – do what feels best for you.

Grab your inner rockstar and start the day right. Breathe deep, relax, let go, and shake it off. Today is going to be amazing. 

Grounding by the signs:

  • Earth signs: Grab a snack, take time out. 

  • Fire signs: Call a friend, listen to a rock song. 

  • Water signs: Have a shower or go to the beach. 

  • Air signs: Dim the lights and rest your eyes.
