THE MEDITATION STARTER KIT

Meditation is the single most powerful tool to calm your body and mind. It plays an essential part in our path to self-mastery — being physically, emotionally and spiritually comfortable in our own space.

What meditation entails can vary greatly between place and practitioner — from chanting and guided approaches in group settings, to breathing techniques and affirmations specific to the individual — but visualisation plays a core part across all.

There are many simple ways to work meditation into your daily life, and you’ll feel the difference when you do. Meditation, like prayer, is a conscious way to ask for what we want and create the space we need to receive it. The more we train our brains to process and keep our thoughts in order, the simpler it becomes to disconnect from the chaos of modern life.

While there are no right or wrong ways to meditate, here are a number of tips and tricks to ensure your process works for you.

The Beginner’s Guide to Meditation

  1. Choose somewhere comfortable. Sit or lie down, eyes open or closed — it’s your choice. Whatever makes you feel good.

  2. Put on a relaxing playlist or album. A couple of my favourites on Spotify are Ik Ardas Wahe Guru or Ease Anxiety.

  3. Take 5-10 deep breaths. With each inhale, imagine white light rushing into your body; with each exhale, imagine any negative energy leaving it.

  4. Visualise a safe, sacred space inside your mind where you can relax and connect with your inner self. It can be from a book, movie, happy memory or somewhere entirely imaginary. This is your world, where you have everything you need. You feel happy and satisfied. You look forward to the days ahead, but for now, you have time to rest as long as you need.

  5. Keep breathing deep as you look around your sacred space, grounding into your private world. It’s okay if thoughts filter in or if you think of nothing. Your brain needs time to relax and process. The more you relax, the more your body can heal.

  6. Stay as long as you like. Feel good.

  7. When you’re ready, take a mental photo of this beautiful space. In your mind, transform it into a big bubble of protection to bring with you throughout the day.

  8. Open your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Drink some water, and thank yourself for being you.

Always be grateful for what you have, but don’t be afraid to ask for more. The universe is infinite, and so are our blessings.
